Armed Gunmen Kill Medical Store Cashier in Chandigarh’s Sector 11
Beautiful City Under Threat.
A brazen daylight shooting in Chandigarh’s Sector 11 market on Saturday afternoon left a 45-year-old cashier dead. The victim, identified as Jaanki Dass, was working at Kumar Medicos when armed assailants targeted him inside the store.
How the Attack Unfolded
- The Arrival: At approximately 2:30 PM, three suspects arrived at the market on a single motorcycle. While one remained outside to watch the bike, two masked men armed with firearms entered Kumar Medicos.
- The Shooting: The gunmen walked directly to the counter and opened fire on Jaanki Dass from close range. A total of 13 rounds were fired in quick succession.
- The Aftermath: The attackers fled the scene on their motorcycle. Dass, who suffered critical injuries, was rushed to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), where he later succumbed to his wounds.
The Investigation and Potential Motives
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sumer Partap Singh confirmed the fatality and stated that law enforcement is exploring all possible angles.
While the SSP noted that there is currently no evidence of a recent extortion demand, investigators are looking closely at past events. Sources revealed that the medical store’s owner had previously received threats. Notably, in 2017, shots were fired into the air outside Kumar Brothers Medicos, though no one was injured in that incident. Police are working to determine if this fatal shooting is connected to that old rivalry, extortion, or a specific personal target.
Current Police Action: Chandigarh Police have set up nakabandi (barricades and checkpoints) across the city. Specialized teams, including the Crime Branch, are actively analyzing CCTV footage from the shop and neighboring properties to identify and track down the three suspects.
